Since upgrading all four types of your minions to the maximum level of four requires 16 dark crystals (one per level per minion type), that doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for error through the game (because you haven't found them all yet). It's recommended you make only the most crucial of item until you have all the dark crystals. A rare and limited resource used for the making of the most potent items. If you want to get an endless supply of gnomes, unlock the green minion hive from the Everlight Facility. GEMS - An uncommon resource which Giblet refers to as, "treasure."
